General rules

Meet in a safe, public place in daylight and bring someone with you where possible. Inspect goods before paying. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.

Keep conversations on the platform for as long as possible, and be cautious if someone pushes you to move to another app immediately.

Accommodation

Never pay a deposit or holding fee before viewing the property in person or by live video. Ask for the landlord or agent's identity, check the tenancy agreement, and confirm deposit protection. Walk away from anyone who refuses a viewing.

Jobs

Never pay for a job, a training place, a 'visa slot' or a Certificate of Sponsorship — it is illegal for a UK employer to charge you for sponsorship. Verify the employer independently and be sceptical of offers made without an interview.

Payments

Avoid bank transfers to strangers, gift cards, crypto and 'friends and family' payments. Never share one-time passcodes, card details or your bank login.

Red flags

Prices far below market value, urgency and pressure, refusal to meet or video call, requests to pay a 'courier' or 'agent', poor grammar in official-looking documents, and payment before any inspection.
